Terrific Tile!

Want big impact in your kitchen or bath? Tile will transform your space. It is one of the staple materials of the contemporary kitchen and bath. While tile has been around for centuries in one form or another, technology has improved the composition as well as the ability to create beautiful designs on tile.

Handmade and artisan materials are being used more and more in homes, including handmade and painted tile. White subway tile will still be popular but there are more sizes, textures (wavy, geometric), and finishes will be used. Think matte versus glossy.

Where is tile used?

In kitchens, tile is typically used as a backsplash behind sinks and ranges, between countertops and cabinetry. Tile can be used as a countertop material but this isn’t as popular as it once was. Sometimes tile flooring can be seen in kitchens as well.

In bathrooms, tile is used in showers, as flooring, walls, and backsplashes behind sinks. Using a contrasting tile border can add a thrilling element. Bold tiles make a stunning border as well.

Where else is tile used? We use tile in mudrooms where wet shoes and boots collect. Larger tiles 12” x 12” are often employed. You might not be aware that there are different thicknesses of tile and not all are appropriate for every project.

Another way to “play” with tile is by using contrasting grout colors. You may see white subway tile with dark gray grout, or even red, to provide visual interest.
