Stewards of the Planet: Observing Earth Day Next Week and Every Week

We consider ourselves good stewards of our planet, and do what we can to observe Earth Day every week. This year’s theme resonates with us: Protect Our Species. Not only do we support safeguards for endangered species, we also practice environmental mindfulness all year long. Here are some of the ways we have cared for our globe:

  •  Work with companies that do “green” demolition

  • Recycling appliances and repurposing cabinetry whenever possible

  •  Using sustainable products whenever possible including low VOC paints, flooring, and countertops

  •  Installing environmentally-friendly lighting, using LED lighting whenever possible

  • Working with companies who are LEED certified

Green Building and Recycling Appliances

Whenever we can, we encourage clients to recycle appliances and repurpose cabinetry – either in another location at the project like the garage or basement – or to donate their cabinets, appliances and even sinks to non-profits like the Center for EcoTechnology. A wonderful resource for green building, they operate an outlet for used materials at their Eco Building Bargains in Springfield, MA. Homeowners and contractors can schedule their team to pick-up items. It’s the ultimate in recycling.

We champion all companies in our industry who work hard to conserve our precious natural resources. Great strides have been made in our region and across the United States to be more conscientious, especially regarding energy consumption. There has been growth in the solar and wind energy sector. Many states have enacted water conservation laws which in turn have inspired the bath fixture companies to come up with more inventive ways to aerate the water in our showers!

Sourcing locally is another practice that we strive to incorporate into our design work. We use local artisans whenever we can. One of our favorite “green” materials to use for countertops is concrete. Environmentally friendly? Yes! “Concrete contains mostly just good old sand, rock and cement," says Jeff Girard, president of The Concrete Countertop Institute and one of the Concrete Network's technical experts. You can further reduce the ecological impact by mixing in recycled waste materials and using a non-toxic water-based finishing sealer.

Finally, we understand that some clients have developed sensitivities to the chemicals in our environment. We are always asking important questions to ensure that the spaces we create are healthy and safe as well as beautiful and functional. In this way, we observe Earth Day and foster an attitude of stewardship for this magnificent marble we call our planet.
